When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, schools all over the world quickly switched to online tests and learning from home, showing us the huge potential of digital education. However, this quick change also showed us what’s missing: there’s still not enough research on how these online timed tests work and how they affect students. There’s also a big gap in understanding how these systems are designed from a user experience standpoint.

This case study aims to fill that gap. As a UX designer, I got a unique chance to work on improving one of these systems at Grok Academy, a leader in digital education in Australia. My job was to look closely at Grok’s Timed Exam Mode, figure out what was working and what wasn’t, and make it better. My goal was to create an environment where students could concentrate fully on their exams, free from the distractions of a confusing interface.
